Jordan Burby

Black Belt

Jordan enrolled in Taekwondo at West Coast Taekwondo in Tustin when he was 8 years old. In February 2001 (age 11) he had worked his way up the various colored belts and was ready to test for his black belt. This 7 minute clip is edited from a whole day of practicing and testing and the evening event when he received his 1st Degree Probationary Black Belt. He continued to study and train and in June 2001 he received his 1st Degree Decided Black Belt and in December 2001 he received his 1st Degree Senior Black Belt.

There are several sections to this video:

Testing - There are several aspects to testing and students must perform all of them satisfactorily to advance in Taekwondo.

  • Forms - A form is a routine of specific moves in a specific order. The higher the rank, the more difficult the moves.

  • Kicks - Three kicks are performed
  • Sparing - Because several students spar at the same time, it is difficult to pick Jordan out of the crowd. In this clip he is sparring with a guy quite a bit taller than him.
  • Board Breaks - This is the exciting conclusion to testing day.

Presentation -

  • Receiving the Black Belt with comments from Mrs. Williams
  • Statement - Mrs. Williams reads a statement Jordan wrote about what earning his Black Belt means to him.
